Annual Conference steering group
This group provides strategic oversight for the Society's annual conference and its planning for the conference in future years.
Professor Tim Besley is School Professor of Economics of Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE. He is also a member of the National Infrastructure Commission, Fellow of the Econometric Society and British Academy. He is also a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Carol is Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of Faculty & Research at Imperial College Business School, London. In 2010 she was awarded a CBE for her services to social science, in 2014 she was elected as a fellow of the British Academy and in 2018 she was appointed as an International Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine. In recognition of her work she has twice been awarded the Arrow Award and received the American Economic Association 2016 prize.

Michael is Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at St Hugh’s College. His research has been published in journals including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of International Economics.
Andrew is now retired, following 13 years as CFO & Finance Director at the LSE and 20+ years with Xerox Corporation’s European Headquarters. Since retirement, he has had assignments as Director of Finance and Corporate Resources at The British Academy and as a Non-Executive Director at a London NHS Trust. He is a Trustee of the Epilepsy Society, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.
Now Emeritus, Denise was employed at the University of Manchester for 38 years, 23 as professor, publishing more than 80 papers and one book, many with international collaborators. External roles include Sub-Panel Chair UK RAE2008, Deputy Panel Convenor Hong Kong RAE2014 and service for the Royal Economic Society, Economic and Social Research Council and Leverhulme Trust, among others.

Leighton joined the RES as Chief Executive in 2017. Prior to joining the Society, Leighton held senior roles at a large academic publisher and at the Microbiology Society. A social scientist by background, he has a postgraduate diploma in Voluntary Sector Management from Cass Business School and a diploma in Charity Management from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

Marie-Luiza manages all operations within the Society, covering finance, human resources, events, grants and Council elections. She is also data protection lead on GDPR. Marie-Luiza has an extensive background as a senior manager within the charity sector specialising in new projects around organisational change and workforce development.
