Our Council supervises and advises on the Society’s activities.  It meets twice-yearly and consists of:

Prof Carol Propper

President

Carol is Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of Faculty & Research at Imperial College Business School, London. In 2010 she was awarded a CBE for her services to social science, in 2014 she was elected as a fellow of the British Academy and in 2018 she was appointed as an International Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine. In recognition of her work she has twice been awarded the Arrow Award and received the American Economic Association 2016 prize.

Prof Rachel Griffith

Rachel is Professor of Economics at the University of Manchester and a Research Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Prof Tim Besley

President Elect

Professor Sir Tim Besley is School Professor of Economics of Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE. He is also a member of the National Infrastructure Commission, Fellow of the Econometric Society and British Academy. He is also a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Sue Holloway

Honorary Treasurer

Sue is now retired. She worked in the Government Economic Service for 13 years – at the Office for National Statistics, managing the GES and as Deputy Chief Economist at the Department for International Development. Following that she ran two charities - Pro Bono Economics and latterly Project Oracle.

Prof Denise Osborn

Secretary-General

Now Emeritus, Denise was employed at the University of Manchester for 38 years, 23 as professor, publishing more than 80 papers and one book, many with international collaborators. External roles include Sub-Panel Chair UK RAE2008, Deputy Panel Convenor Hong Kong RAE2014 and service for the Royal Economic Society, Economic and Social Research Council and Leverhulme Trust, among others.

Michele is a professor of economics at the University of Edinburgh and a professor at the European University Institute.

Prof Wendy Carlin

Council member (until 2020)

Wendy is professor of economics at University College London and a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). She leads the CORE project www.core-econ.org, a global collaboration of researchers changing the way economics is taught.

Prof Kevin O'Rourke

Kevin is the Chichele Professor of Economic History at the University of Oxford.

Robert Peston

Council member (until 2020)

Robert is a TV presenter, the political editor for ITV News, chairman of end-of-life charity Hospice UK and founder of the education charity Speakers for Schools. His books include "WTF" and ”How do we fix this mess”?

Prof Martin Weale

Council member (until 2020)

Martin Weale is Professor of Economics at King’s College London and a member of the Office for National Statistics Economic Experts Working Group. Before joining King’s in 2016 he was a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and, until 2010, Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

Frank is a professor of econometrics at the University of Bristol and a research fellow at the Centre for Microdata Methods and Practice.

Prof Christian Dustmann

Council member (until 2021)

Christian Dustmann is Professor of Economics at University College London and the founding Director of the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration. He is a leading labour economist and an elected Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) and the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), and regularly advises government bodies, international organizations, and the media on current policy issues.

Prof Amelia Fletcher

Amelia is Professor of Competition Policy at the Centre of Competition Policy, University of East Anglia. She is Non-Executive Director at the CMA, FCA and Payment Systems Regulator and a member of the Ofgem Enforcement Decision Panel. She has a DPhil and MPhil in economics from Nuffield College, Oxford and was awarded an OBE in 2014.

Prof Rafaella Giacomini

Professor of Economics at University College London. Rafaella Giacomini research interests are Time Series Econometrics, Forecasting and Applied Macroeconomics.

Prof Beata Javorcik

Beata is Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford, fellow of All Souls College, managing editor of Economic Policy and Director of the International Trade Programme at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).

Prof Paola Manzini

Council member (until 2021)

Paola Manzini is Professor of Economics at the University of Sussex. In her research she models human decisions and interactions in possibly conflictual strategic situations. Her most recent work models the behaviour of agents who fail the classic assumptions of full rationality.

Prof Tim Worrall

Tim is Professor of Economics at the University of Edinburgh. He has held previous appointments at Manchester, Keele, Liverpool, Reading and Cambridge. Tim was Secretary to the Conference of Heads of University Departments of Economics (CHUDE), a sub-committee of the Royal Economic Society, 2007-2012.

Hasan is Executive Director for Creative Economy and Data Analytics at Nesta and Adjunct Professor of Creative Industries at the Queensland University of Technology.

Prof Brit Grosskopf

Council member (until 2022)

Brit is Head of Economics at the University of Exeter where she also leads the Behaviour, Identity and Decision Research Cluster. She has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Game Theory and the Journal of Economic Psychology. Prior to moving to Exeter, she founded the Birmingham Experimental Economics Laboratory (BEEL).

Friederike is Professor of Economics at the University of Essex and visiting guest professor at Lund University.

Prof Mary S Morgan

Council member (until 2022)

Mary is Professor of History and Philosophy of Economics at LSE and was the Vice President of publications at the British Academy between 2014 and 2018.

Martin Sandbu

Council member (until 2022)

Martin Sandbu is the Financial Times's European Economics Commentator. He has been writing for the FT since 2009, when he joined the paper as Economics Leader Writer. Before joining the FT, he worked in academia and policy consulting. He has taught and carried out research at Harvard, Columbia and the Wharton School, and has advised governments and NGOs on natural resources and economic development.

Prof Chris Wallace

Chris is Head of the Economics department at the University of Manchester and was the associate editor of the Economic Journal between 2009 and 2015.

Sascha is Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE).

Prof Alessandra Guariglia

Council member (until 2023)

Alessandra received her PhD from Boston University. She is currently Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Birmingham. She is an associate editor of the European Journal of Finance. Her research interests are in the areas of applied financial economics, health economics, and the economics of transition in China.

Prof Michael McMahon

Michael is Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at St Hugh’s College. His research has been published in journals including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of International Economics.

Rain Newton-Smith

Council member (until 2023)

Rain Newton-Smith is the chief economist at the Confederation of British Industry and previously the head of emerging markets at Oxford Economics. Prior to that, Rain worked on the international forecast for the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of England. She was honoured by the World Economic Forum in 2012 as a young global leader.

Prof Barbara Petrongolo

Barbara Petrongolo is Professor of Economics at Queen Mary University, Director of the CEPR Labour Economics Programme and Research Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance of the LSE. She is an applied labour economist. She has worked extensively on the performance of labour markets with search frictions, and the causes and characteristics of gender inequalities in labour market outcomes.

Prof Imran Rasul

Imran is Professor of Economics at UCL and a co-director of the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy (CPP) at the IFS.

Ms Tera Allas

Council representative (until 2024)

Tera leads economic research McKinsey & Company and is a Trustee of the Productivity Leadership Group and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. Previously, she worked as Deputy Head of the Government Economic Service and as a management consultant at McKinsey. Tera holds a M.Sc. in Technology and Industrial Economics (with distinction) from Aalto University and an M.B.A. (with distinction) from INSEAD.

Prof Emilia del Bono

Professor of Economics and Director of Research, University of Essex. Her research agenda is focused on the nature, causes, and consequences of disparities in children’s human capital that lead to inequalities later on in life.

Prof Jagjit Chadha

Council member (until 2024)

Jagjit Chadha is Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR). He was Professor of Economics at the University of Kent, Cambridge and St Andrews. He has worked at the Bank of England on Monetary Policy and as Chief Quantitative Economist at BNP Paribas and served as Chair of the Money, Macro, Finance Study Group. He has acted as Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee and adviser to the Bank of England, HM Treasury and to many central banks.

Prof Simon Gächter

Simon joined the University of Nottingham in February 2005. He is Professor of the Psychology of Economic Decision Making. He received his doctorate in Economics in Vienna. Before coming to Nottingham he worked at the Universities of Vienna, Linz, Zurich, and St. Gallen. He is also affiliated with the CESifo network (Munich), and the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA Bonn).

Dr Sara Horrell

Council member (until 2024)

Sara Horrell is a Reader in Economic History in the Faculty of Economics, University of Cambridge and a Fellow at Murray Edwards College. Her research focuses on women's and children's work and welfare in C19th Britain and in contemporary contexts. She was an editor of the Economic History Review 2015-19 and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Research Associate at CAGE, University of Warwick.

Prof Karen Mumford CBE

Council member (until 2024)

Karen Mumford is a Professor who specialises in applied labour economics. She received her PhD from the Australian National University (ANU). She is currently an elected Member of the RES Council, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and an IZA Research Fellow. She was appointed CBE for services to Economics and Labour Market Diversity in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List.
