2011 Young Economist of the Year
For the 2011 essay competition the titles chosen by the Royal Economic Society President and judges were:
- "Is the rise of China good for America and Europe?"
- "Has recent government policy towards banks reduced the chance of another big financial crisis - or increased it?"
- "Would a 'fat tax' be an effective policy to counter obesity?"
- "An NHS free at point of access is unsustainable in the 21st century and an alternative funding model is needed." Discuss
- "Should governments go for growth or for happiness?"
The Royal Economic Society is delighted to announce that the three winners of the 2011 essay competition are:
- First: Mayank Banerjee, Dame Allan’s Sixth Form, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
- Second: David Alam, Queen Elizabeth’s Oakwood, Barnet.
- Third: Daniel Turner, Nottingham High School.

The trophy and winning cheques were presented at the Society’s Public Lecture in London on 14th December.
