2014 Conference General Information

Conference Location

All conference sessions, together with tea/coffee and lunch, will take place in the University Place building (building number 37 on the campus map). This is a recently constructed teaching and conference block, which can be found on Oxford Road opposite the University’s Main Building. It is easily recognised by its distinctive grey, drum-shaped, front.

Conference Arrival and Registration

The Conference Registration Desk is located on the ground floor of the University Place Building. The registration desk will be manned throughout the conference, from 11.00 on Monday 7th April until 18.30 on Wednesday 9th April. The University is just south of the city centre and University Place is on Oxford Road, between Booth Street East and Brunswick Street; see the map.

Information about travel to Manchester and from the city centre to University Place can be found on the conference website through this link. Delegates staying in the city centre are strongly advised to walk or take a bus from there to the conference venue. Manchester is a major city, with inevitable traffic problems, especially as work is currently under way on a second tram route across the city centre.

Car Parking

Two car parks are conveniently located for conference delegates, on Booth Street East (the Aquatics Centre car park) and Booth Street West. They are similar distances from University Place, but the Aquatics car park does not require crossing Oxford Road, which is a major thoroughfare. For either car park, drivers should collect a ticket on entry and pay at one of the machines prior to collecting their vehicle.

Sessions and Presentations

All seminar rooms have a PC with a connected data projector. The complete suite of Microsoft Office products as well as pdf readers are available on these PCs. Presenters should bring their presentation on a memory stick and upload it to their Session Room’s PC in the break before their session. Laptops can be connected to the projector via a VGA connection; presenters using an Apple laptop must supply their own adaptor to connect to the VGA cable. Most rooms also have a visualiser.

All General Sessions are 90 minutes in length, with two to four speakers per session. When there are four papers, each speaker is expected to restrict their presentation to around 20 minutes including questions and answers. If the allocated chair is not available, the last speaker listed in a session should take the role of session chair.

First Aid and Emergency Services

Should you require first aid you should go directly to the registration desk or talk to one of the Conference Volunteers (in purple shirts) who will arrange for further assistance. Campus Security can be called on 0161-306 9966 (ext. 69966). Outside Campus the number for emergencies is 999 which you can dial from any landline or mobile phone without charge.

All conference attendees will have access to the University’s Wifi system (‘UoM Wifi’), which can be used throughout the University Place building and elsewhere on campus; your individual username and password will be supplied in your conference badge holder. Alternatively, you can use eduroam if you have been registered to do so through your home institution.

Four computers which you can access using your allocated University of Manchester login and password are located on the Ground Floor opposite the Reception Desk.

The conference office is not able to print any documents for delegates.

There is a Lounge Area available for the use of delegates on Level 1 outside the entrance to Theatre B.

Luggage can be stored in University Place Room 2.217. A member of staff will be on duty at the room on Wednesday 9th April; on other days, please contact the Conference Registration Desk on the ground floor of University Place.

The Conference Press Office is located in University Place Room 4.207.

Convenience Store, a Stationery Shop and Bookshop (Blackwells) are located underneath the footbridge on the opposite side of Oxford Road from University Place.

The nearest ATM can be found at the Royal Bank of Scotland branch on the first floor of the Precinct Building. To reach this, walk up the ramp on the opposite side of Oxford Road from University Place, or take the escalator outside the Spar store across the road. ATMs and a branch of NatWest can be found a couple of minutes’ walk away. To get there from the University Place building, turn left and walk down Oxford Road (do not cross the road).

Telephone dialling code

The international dialling code for the UK is +44.

Important note about UK Power

The UK uses 240v power supply. No provision will be made by conference organisers to supply power converters. If a delegate wishes to bring electrical equipment that operates on a different voltage, he or she must bring their own converter.
