| The UK government has published the report entitled
"A Review of Women's Employment and Pay" by Denise
Kingsmill CBE, Deputy Director of the Competition Commission.
It has a number of recommendations for reducing the gender pay
gap in Britain, including the use of voluntary pay audits by employers.
The report can be obtained from Amanda Dyson at the Women and Equality
Unit on 020 7273 6488. The report is also available on the Kingsmill
Review website - http://www.kingsmillreview.gov.uk.

It draws on research recently completed by the National Institute
of Economic and Social Research, for the Cabinet Office and Women
and Equality Unit: (T. Anderson, J. Forth, H. Metcalf and S. Kirby
(2001), The Gender Pay Gap, Women and Equality Unit Research
Report.) which can be obtained from the Unit
(Email: amanda.dyson@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk,
Website: www.womens-unit.gov.uk).
One item in the Kingsmill report will be of particular interest
to members of the RES. This is her challenge to academic economists
to come up with research to support for the notion that there is
a business case" for the pursuit of equal pay. The government
has not accepted her recommendation for a new research centre, but
is said to be opening discussions with ESRC as to how research should
be taken forward. Anyone interested in the challenge could make
themselves known to the Women and Equality Unit.
