Economic Uncertainties
British Association Annual Festival of Science 1998

The British Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Festival of Science took place from 6-11 September at Cardiff University. This year, Section F (economics), under the Presidency of Professor Sir James Mirrlees of the University of Cambridge, 1996 Nobel Laureate and former President of the Royal Economic Society, featured a series of presentations on the uncertainties of economic growth, economic policy, economic forecasting, the stock market, exchange rates, the welfare state and the crisis in East Asia:

Wednesday 9 September:

  • 2pm The Uncertainties of Economic Growth - Speaker: Professor Sir James Mirrlees, Trinity College, Cambridge
  • 3pm Policy in an Uncertain World: The Challenge of Globalisation - Speaker: Professor Patrick Minford, Cardiff Business School and CEPR
  • 4pm Financial Liberalisation and Economic Growth - Speaker: Martin Wolf, Financial Times
  • 4.45pm Forecast Uncertainties in Macroeconometric Analysis - Speaker: Professor Hashem Pesaran, University of Cambridge

    Thursday 10 September:

  • 9.30am Understanding Currency Attacks - Speaker: Hyun Shin, Nuffield College, Oxford and CEPR
  • 10.15am Uncertainty and the Welfare State - Speaker: Professor Tim Beasley, London School of Economics and CEPR
  • 11.30am Asset Bubbles, Dominoes and Sharks: Elements of the Asian Crisis - Speaker: Professor Marcus Miller, Warwick University and CEPR
  • 12.15pm The Role of Financial Markets in Allocating Risks - Speaker: Professor David Webb, London School of Economics
