Junior Fellowship Scheme

RES ONE-YEAR JUNIOR FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

The Society is able to offer 6 one-year junior fellowships, tenable at Universities in the United Kingdom. The amount of the fellowship is currently set at £8,00O (£11,000 in London). This sum will be paid to the Universities, which will make appropriate arrangements for paying the recipients of the fellowship awards at regular intervals.

Candidates should have completed at least two years' work towards a doctoral thesis when they take up an award. Those who have already completed their doctorates may also be considered upon application to the Secretary-General.

Those awarded Fellowships must undertake a minimum of 60 hours teaching, plus 15 hours preparation time, in the academic year. The maximum amount of teaching (including tutorials/supervisions undertaken for Colleges) is 80 hours, excluding 20 hours preparation time.

Students who already have full financial support for the academic year are not eligible for a fellowship award.

Applications must be submitted by the candidate’s Head of Department and those awarded Fellowships must submit a report to the Secretary-General of the Society at the end of the academic year. Universities will be invited by the Secretary-General of the Society to make application for the awards in the Spring of each year.

Conference Grant Scheme

The Society's Conference Grant Fund is available to members who are presenting a paper, or acting as a principal discussant at a conference; support of up to £500 is available. Awards are made three times a year. The closing dates for applications are 31 January, 31 May, and 30 September each year in respect of conferences which take place in the ensuing four months.

The closing dates are strict. If applicants have not yet received confirmation that their paper has been accepted for a conference, they should still apply by the appropriate closing date. Any award made will be conditional on confirmation of their participation at the conference.

Please note that the awards under the conference grant scheme are highly competitive, and selection will be based on the following criteria. These criteria should be addressed by the Head of Department in his/her supporting statement on the application form.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who are new entrants to the profession.
  • Preference will be given for attendance at high-impact international conferences.
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose attendance cannot ordinarily be funded from other sources, such as existing research grants.

Please note that no awards will be made to any applicant who has received an RES grant (under the Conference Grant or Support for Small Academic Expenses schemes) in the 3 previous years.

Training and Support for Younger Members

Easter & Autumn Schools

The Royal Economic Society has granted funds to the University of Birmingham to provide an Easter School for twenty years.

These schools are intended primarily for advanced postgraduate students doing doctoral research but are also open to members of the teaching and research staff. The purpose is to enable participants to become acquainted with the latest developments in the selected fields of economics, to have the opportunity for study and discussion with two internationally renowned experts in the topics covered, and to meet other young researchers.
Places are usually available for 25 resident participants. Accommodation and meals are provided for the duration of the course.

Nominations are made through the applicant’s Head of Department and should be supported by a short CV, a reference, and a note on the applicant’s research interests.
Application dates are provided on the website, the RES newsletter and emailed to University Heads of Economics Departments via CHUDE.

The RES is delighted that RES financial support combined with success in obtaining funding from the ESRC’s Researcher Development Initiative, will enable the University of Birmingham to now run two schools in 2010, 2011 and 2012. One school will be devoted to some aspect(s) of macroeconomics, and the other to subjects of a microeconomic character.

The 20th RES Easter School will be held on 18 and 22 April 2010. The instructors are Professor Nobuhiro Kiyotaki of Princeton, and Professor Stephen Morris, also of Princeton
The topics are Finance and Business Cycles. Applications are now closed but for further details please go to the Easter School website.

The first RES Autumn School will start on Monday September 20, and conclude on the late afternoon of Thursday September 23.
The subjects are Game Theory and Energy Markets; the lecturers will be Professor Peyton Young (Oxford) and Professor Richard Green (Birmingham).

Further information can be found here.

Applications should be submitted no later than Friday, 11th June, 2010 by post to the Royal Economic Society Autumn School Secretary, Department of Economics, The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT or by email: easterschool@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
