The Royal Economic Society is established to promote and foster the study of economic science. The Society is also concerned with the
application of the results of that study. It achieves this currently through the RES Annual Conference, a Postgraduate (PhD) Conference and helping to further the study of
economics via the Annual Public Lecture, a programme of Small Grants, Conference Grants and Junior Fellowships, and The Young Economist of the Year which is an annual essay
competition for Young Economists focused on schools.
The RES Conference
The Annual Conference aims to bring together economists from government, industry, higher education, the financial sector, and journalism. The conference is open to all those interested in analytical economics and policy problems; members of the Society are able to attend at reduced rates. The conference takes place near the Easter break and lasts three days. More information is available from The RES Conference.
Postgraduate Meeting and Job Market
The aim of this event is to provide a service both for for PhD students seeking academic jobs in the UK or elsewhere in Europeand UK and European university economics departments wishing to recruit lecturers. This meeting taking place in January each year, has grown to be an extremely successful event, well supported by both students and potential employers. The event consists of two days of students presentations and poster sessions. Participating institutions attend these presentations and are also allocated a table at the conference site in order to arrange individual appointments with participating students during the course of the conference.

The Annual Public Lecture
The RES annual public lecture was first held in 2001 and was attended by approximately 500 individuals. This initiative by the RES aims to bring the best communicators in the economics profession into contact with a wide public and to show the importance of top-quality economic research. Aimed principally at sixth form students of Economics but relevant to everyone with an interest in economics, the Annual Public Lecture has become an established part of the senior school calendar. The lecture is held in London and in one other venue around the UK towards the end of the year. As part of the London event, the prize for the Young Economist of the Year Competition is presented (for more details see Essay Competition).

The RES Training Schools
These schools held at the University of Birmingham are intended primarily for advanced postgraduate students doing doctoral research but are also open to members of the teaching and research staff. The purpose is to enable participants to become acquainted with the latest developments in the selected fields of economics, to have the opportunity for study and discussion with two internationally renowned experts in the topics covered, and to meet other young researchers. The Society is delighted that RES financial support combined with success in obtaining funding from the ESRC’s Researcher Development Initiative, will enable the University of Birmingham to now run two schools in 2010, 2011 and 2012. One school will be devoted to some aspect(s) of macroeconomics, and the other to subjects of a microeconomic character. For more details please see RES Training Schools.
