Annual Conference

The Annual Conference aims to bring together economists from government, industry, higher education, the financial sector, and journalism. The conference is open to all those interested in analytical economics and policy problems; members of the Society are able to attend at reduced rates. The conference takes place near the Easter break and lasts three days. A selection of the papers presented at the conference forms the May issue of The Economic Journal in the following year. In addition, there are a number of special lectures during the conference as well as sessions devoted entirely to policy issues and special sessions for young economists to present the results of their research and exchange ideas with their peers. In recent years, displays of computer equipment and software have also been introduced.

Financial assistance for Postgraduate Students attending the RES2012
All PhD students who are members of the RES (regardless of their nationality) and are not in full time employment can apply to the Royal Economic Society for financial support to assist with conference attendance. This application is made after the conference via an online claim form. The form will be available on this page shortly after the conference. Applicants will also be required to supply original receipts to support the claim.

The deadline for claims will be 20th April 2012. Claims will then be settled as soon as possible – though this is likely to run into June.

A fixed budget will be allocated between all applicants to this scheme and therefore no guarantee can be given in advance about the level of support for individual applicants. In 2011 the scheme was able to cover the conference fee and accommodation cost for all applicants, and offer some compensation for travel costs. The level of support will also depend on whether the applicant is presenting a paper or not. For further details on eligibility, please go to this PDF document
